Contemplate...

"The tragedy is that there are many walking encyclopedias who are living failures"

This phrase appears in the book 'You Can Win ' by Shiv Khera. Do you agree ? Do you think formal education plays no role in success? Is it only about attitude and experience?Or is it that institutions fail to build character and inculcate the right attitude?

Ive seen both sides of the coin...guys who had excellent academic records fail to survive in the industry....and then college drop-outs turning into successful project manages at young age coz of the dedication towards work....

in the end, I believe it depends on how to handle current situation...success will just follow

Formal education is required, but it may not be the only source to success. There are some folks with PhD's in my college, but they cant even spell "Philosophy".
And there are few with no education but do the work of HOD's.

@Arz00n: Then do you think we need to upgrade our teaching methodologies to train better professionals?

@Virus: If formal education is absolutely necessary...then how come people like Dirubhai Ambani with little formal education became business stalwarts?

I believe...upgrading teaching methodologies is just going to act as burden on the young minds...wht they need is the presence of mind to handle real life situation..

if you ask me, what knowledge I am using from ma degree...I just cant tell u anything...coz wht happens in industry is totally diff...I dont mean, education is no more imp...but its not the *only* thing anymore.

That's what I say. Formal education is not the absolute soution. It may help you gorify your resume, it may shine your name plate outside your house, it may further land you into a good institution or maybe help you grab a hot job... But it seldom elevates you to that blissful state where you truely feel that you've achieved whatever you'd wished and thought of.

And the dude Dhiru, as you pointed out, was one man who made it big without any "proper" formal education. That proves it all. Formal education is not the only means for success.

I agree to a large extent with ArzOOOn. So many people who academically seem destined for brilliance have crashed while so many "wild cards" are successes today in my life - It's how you deal with situations that make you. Education will take you to the mountain. Jumping into the pond of success- thats your job.

Everything ultimately boils down to one's goal and attitude in life. If its the lucre, a cushy job and nice family that many so called "encyclopedias" want...so be it. An utter failure (educationally) with a "junoon" to be something in life might easily leapfrog such encyclopedias in every aspect. No educational institution can impart such kinda training. Its primarily one's outlook that decides.

@arz00n: True...All you need is lil common sense and positive attitude to thrive in this highly competitive world!

@virus: "shine your name plate outside your house"..so very true...I guess half the people end up doing things that are completely unrelated to what they have studied!!

@roshan : "Education will take you to the mountain. Jumping into the pond of success"...loved this quote!

@tejas: I do agree institutions cannnot make our decide your goal...but it can definitely shape our attitude...it can definitely groom your thinking process...nowadays education is all about mugging...wt's the use?Isn't it complete waste of time!!

@Arunabh: Any particular reason?
just curious :D

i think the goal of education should be to sharpen one's intellect and the ability to analyse.. if you inherently have these skills, there is actually no big need for a formal education!

hey ...nice catch... very true ... we cannot contribute to our own(india here) society as we fail to understand it ... the education system(we dont have a unique edu system of our own) doesnt teach that ..... more emphasis is on westernization than mordenization .... rather mordenization is equated westernization ....

Formal Education for me has not been a failure. Although its not the only experience that we get in our life. Our background , interaction with our family and friends do build and define our character and values. Knowledge can be absorbed and adsorbed, but values are what builds your focus, concentration and dedication.
