The Truth about TRUTH

When was the last time you lied? Just an hour ago, when my friend asked if I was free to go for a walk I politely declined. I told her that I was busy with my project when I was not doing anything even remotely related. Why? Just because I didn’t feel like going and didn’t wanted to tell the real reason!

Truth…Why do we attach an idyllic and superlative tag to this extremely rare phenomenon? The truth is a bully we all pretend to like, isn’t it? Honesty and truth are fine materials for sermons but when we have to actually follow it in real life, we get frightened.

Have you ever told your friend that she looked terrible that day ? Have you ever tried to disapprove your professor’s absurd blabbers? Never…That is because you neither want to hurt your friend nor screw up your term works! Then why despise this wonderful “Lie”.

Are we honest with ourselves? Then why do we wear make-up? Why do we try to project ourselves as ‘beautiful and wonderful’ when we know that we are not? What is the point in creating an illusion when the truth is contemptibly transparent! We try to camouflage our real feelings by the so called social etiquette. We are trained to say ‘Nice to meet you’ and ‘Thank you’ even though we may not like that person. But our body language and facial expression deceives us. We dare not face the truth!

Truth is an extremely strong principle that has the power to transform us, enlighten us. But for a common man like you and me…let’s face the truth…Lie is not that bad either!Don’t snatch away lies, let us live with them!!

Social interaction is fleeting and takes place in frantically changing environment. Truth is complex and is difficult to understand. So people mask it and avoid being judged. This is the whole point of creating an illusion, because illusions at best are ephemeral and so is most of our social interaction with strangers.

u see,there r two kindsa lies...
1)white lies
2)harmful lies(i like to call them black lies)

we all know that harmless white lies r a part of our daily lies...n if it doesnt ruin our or for that matter anyone else's day...then wts the harm in it?

but ofcourse we shud avoid the black lies!

the point lies in knowing the difference between these 2 lies! else u cud end up in a big trouble!

Times have changed
Times are changing.. and they are changing real fast. Try being true and honest these days and you run the risk of being labelled as a follower of Gandhigiri. More importantly , honesty and truthfulness are pretty bland and boring ;). If i start keeping a count of how many times i lie during a given period of time (shud bel ong enough), i think most counters will fail :P

If I go by definition of truth...then think I lie almost everyday I dont know how many times in a min :)

Yeah....but I believe, unless its not gonna hurt the other person, its okie...

aur vaise bhi I cant lie to ma friend, if she looked terrible..that might just break her down ... hai na?

if telling the truth is gonna get u in unnecesary trouble, as in the case of the profs, then its not worth it, right?.
if a frnd is really in a gud mood or smthn, u dont want him/her to go low by tellin them that they look terrible i thnk...
so i thnk telling the truth or lying really depends on the situation.

I am a compulsive liar and i have been lying as far as i can remember. I tell white lies only. But whenever i do tell the truth(extremely rare case)it seriously makes me happy.

You should read this book called 'Vital Lies Simple Truths' by Dr. Daniel Goleman. It'll give you a deeper insight into what you talk about.

@Aj: Absolutely True!..illusions suits us!!

@Shamanth: Still a lie is a LIE..isn't it?

@Arunabh: "Ghandigiri follower" is still an okayish tag...instead they would label you as a misanthropist!!

It gets even worse once u start moving ahead in life .. There's this wonderful term called "ethics" in business which litreally translated means - to what degree do you cheat :D .. And in a proffessional environment, small lies are inevitable and part of ur daily routine .. However much i wish to say Buzz Off to some people who work with me, i cant - and i have to politely smile, pretend to hear them out and work with them !! Why not tell the truth - well i am ready to tell it, are the others willing to listen ??

Just a thought :
can we really survive a world without lies...

a life where ppl openly bitch about us, point out our flaws, deride us.. sometimes the veil of lying is our only hope.

the last para is a rare phenomenon--- you're speaking the brutal truth, we all DO love to lie! hmmm... weird post that forced me to reconsider a few things. why hide behind camouflages when being truthful n honest is so much more easier. i once heard someone say 'always speak the truth... its a lot easier to remember!'. will agree... with that wise sage and now with you!

tried assessing the longest period of time i can go without lying... results would put the most seasoned liars to shame :(

anyhow... wonderful topic to have blogged about. but you can rename the post as 'food for thought'.
